How to Open Your Pool for the Season

A spring checklist for removing the cover, restarting equipment, balancing water and spotting problems early.

Choose the day

Open when temperatures stabilize and you are ready to care for the pool regularly. Opening early can save a green pool, and opening late invites algae.

A calm dry day is ideal.

Remove and clean the cover

Clear water and debris from the cover before removing it. Clean and dry it before storing. Check for damage.

Keep debris out of the water.

Reconnect and restart equipment

Reinstall plugs, drains and fittings, prime the pump and check for leaks. Start the system and watch pressure and flow.

Check heaters, chlorinators and lights.

Fill and balance

Top up the water, then test and balance pH, alkalinity, calcium and sanitizer. Shock the water if needed.

Run the pump for a full day.

Inspect the pool

Check tile, coping, finish, steps and safety equipment. Look at the deck and the equipment pad. Note anything needing repair.

Take photos for your records.

Set the routine

Set pump schedules, automation and cleaner timing for the season. Plan weekly checks or sign up for service.

Adjust for heat waves.

Our advice in one sentence

Open on a calm day, restart equipment carefully and balance the water before you swim.
